the origin of the letter 🇦

Documentary is called “The Secret History of Writing” done by BBC

this has always fascinated me. I first learned it about 25 years ago, and ever since, every time I see a capital letter A  a tiny voice inside me goes “bull!”

Fun to see an actual scholarly version of this, because I first read it as explained (-ish) by one of Kipling’s “Just So Stories” a very, very long time ago…

Are you trapped on tumblr right now?

Is there something you planned to do before you got trapped in the endless tumblr scroll?

Are you yelling at yourself to get up and do the thing, but you can’t, because you’re trapped in the endless tumblr scroll?

Consider this your save point.

Put tumblr down, stand up, stretch, and go do the thing you planned to do. Future you will be incredibly grateful.

Things people in the notes have been able to do thanks to this post:

  • eat breakfast
  • go to bed
  • get out of bed
  • take a shower
  • write
  • practice
  • watch Superman Returns and write a paper on it
  • retain shreds of sanity

I need y’all to know that you’re doing amazing, and I’m so glad that I was able to help you break out of a procrastination loop you did not want to be stuck in.

It’s the most pupperful time of the year!

March through May is harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) pupping season and we’re lucky enough to have a seal rookery—a nursery for moms and pups—right in our backyard at Hopkins Beach.

Pups stay with their mothers for the first 4-6 weeks of their life. During this crucial bonding time, the pups learn to swim and forage before being weaned and venturing out on their own.

A silver and gray spotted harbor seal bonds with her silver and gray spotted pup by kissing the pup's cheek with her white-whiskered nose as the two rest on the sand in the shore break. The pup is facing head-on into the camera on the right of the image, looking directly into the camera with two large, round, black eyes. Mama seal is curled up in a “C”-shape to the left of the pup, with her back and rear flippers facing us, and her visible right eye gently closed as she nuzzles the pup.ALT

⚠ PSA ⚠ (Public Seal Announcement)

🏝️Give them space and share the shore. Please keep your distance and always remember to stay at least 100 yards away.

❌🤳To minimize stress on our blubbery buddies during an already stressful time (new parents out there, you know what’s up), remember to keep the area quiet, and (sorry!) no sealfies with seals.

💙Come on down to the bay and explore the wonder that is harbor seal pupping season.

This meme is inescapable on French insta so I’m posting it here for all to enjoy

there are francophones debating if “can it” properly conveys how strong the french term is

IMO it’s like….“shut your fuckin trap”

This is a “if a classroom heard their teacher say they’d start hooting and hollering” type of curse; nothing to be appalled by but SO unexpected. And definitely a curse.

I don’t know anything about this show but I’m pretty sure this is a deliberate swing at all of the shows and opinion articles that think it’s appropriate to make this into an argument. “This is how to debate trans rights. Hello, trans person, are you happy? Yes? Good. Debate over.”

And the guy who tries to debate the “anti” side receives, not even a denunciation, but a weary, contemptuous dismissal. I would translate the delivery, if not the phrase, as “Oh, fuck off.”

“Shut the fuck up” would be a better translation in my opinion.

Here’s the thing. In french, “mouth” is “bouche”. But for an animal, it is “gueule”.

Like a human has a “bouche” but a wolf, a cat, a bear etc any animal as a “gueule.”

To say to someone they have a “gueule” and asking them to shut it is literally saying “shut your animal mouth.”

So “shut the fuck up” feels like the most appropriate translation for me.

And obviously yes, that’s the best way to deal with transphobes.
